My First Client: Bryan’s success
I’m pleased to share with you the success and happiness of my first client: Bryan! He is a wonderful person I met through my gym, Diablo Rock Gym and is an active crossfitter with me at Coco Crossfit. Although, he’s WAY more active in crossfit than I am these days… I met Bryan on day 1 of joining cross fit. He always had a smile on his face and always hustled. I’m a people watcher by nature and pick up on that immediately. But, he was never who you would think of being a crossfitter, and I don’t mean that is a bad way. The pictures that fill our new feeds or pictures on TV by Reebok are of ripped athletes that could do a muscle up in their sleep or could walk 100 ft in the handstand position. He was an average guy, some may even say a ‘big’ guy. When people would refer to Bryan, they normally started by saying “big Bryan”.
I struck up many conversations with him and he was such a down-to-earth, real person that we hit it off! He’d tell me to keep pushing and to dig deep. To not be intimidated by the athletes around me, and he always made me feel better. As I’m the only paleo person at Coco (at least the only one that is open about it at the time) I would always throw out hints that everyone should start reevaluating their diets, ESPECIALLY the athletes!! But, alas, my voice normally fell on deaf ears. But not Bryan! He started asking questions, curious as to what paleo was all about until I had him hooked! He came to me and asked if I would work with him.
Let me give you a quick overview of Bryan. He started at 285 lbs and 5’9″ on day 1 of our challenge. He ate the SAD and reached for a soda when stressed. This is the part that killed me the most; on January 1, 2014, Bryan was 310 lbs and was crossfitting 5-6 days a week!! After 1 whole year of busting his hump at one of the most physically demanding sports there is, he only lost 25 lbs!! ONE WHOLE YEAR!!!! This is proof that you CAN NOT OUT EXERCISE A BAD DIET!!!!!!!
My plan for Bryan: I went to his house and did a pantry clean out. I emptied the pantry, fridge, freezer and any other cabinets I could find. Two big boxes later, we were ready for a fresh start! Off to Sprouts for a restocking trip. We walked the outer section of the store and only went to the spice section for coconut oil. After that, he journaled everything he put in his mouth and kept his daily carbohydrate intake between 50-100 grams per day. He dialed back the crossfit to 3-4 days a week, and increased his low level activity by walking. We texted regularly with check-ins, met up at the gym to go over how everything was going and to trouble shoot any issues that may have come up, like going out of town and maintaining our Primal eating!
I couldn’t be more proud of Bryan! On day 30, we weighed and measured and he lost 22 lbs, lost a total of 8.75 inches and chopped off 2 mins and 30 seconds off his 1 mile run time!! What an amazing accomplishment. All in 30 days!! He’s also gained better sleep, more stable energy and improved mood. What more could you want?!? I can’t wait to see what else this great guy does.
